Malena Cazorla Martinez – 2026 – Constraining uncertainty in the cobalt endowment of the Central African Copperbelt: A geological perspective

Malena is a geochemist and ore deposit geologist from Spain. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Geology from the University of Barcelona and a master’s degree in Geochemistry, Ore Deposits, and Alpine Tectonics from the University of Geneva. She has also worked as an assistant curator at the Department of Mineralogy at the Museum of Natural Sciences of Barcelona.

Malena is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Ore Deposits and Critical Raw Materials at iCRAG – University College Dublin driven by a strong interest in geology and its link with society. Her research focuses on the formation of sedimentary rock-hosted cobalt deposits, aiming to improve genetic models and exploration, and supporting the transition towards a decarbonized society. Alongside her research, Malena is engaged in science communication and in raising awareness of the role of geology in everyday life through public engagement and education activities at iCRAG. She has volunteered with organizations such as Women in Mining & Industry Spain and is an active member of the Society of Economic Geologists (SEG), where she has contributed to organizing field trips, workshops, and outreach activities through SEG Student Chapter committees.

Her current career goal is to combine scientific research with the promotion of social and environmental sustainability in economic geology, while continuing to engage and educate the public on mineral resources and their importance.
