Consumers, product manufacturers, civil society and tin industry all have a developing understanding of the potential for business and supply chains to create positive outcomes from their operations. This expectation, together with previous focus on tin as a ‘conflict’ related mineral, point to a highly regulated and audited future.
In order to simplify and harmonise information available to external parties, minimise costs, and ensure comparable reporting and evaluation, ITA and member companies have developed an industry Code of Conduct. The Code is specifically designed for global tin mining and smelting operations and other related company types such as traders, while taking into account all important international standards. Adoption of the Code is a requirement of ITA membership.
The ITA Code of Conduct has 10 Principles addressing basic expectations of legal compliance and publication of policy statements, through areas of widespread interest such as improvements in environmental performance, health and safety, and protection of human rights, to growing issues around positively impacting upstream suppliers of minerals and responsible metal production.
These Principles are supported with more than 70 Standards, some of which are more relevant for mining operations, with others most relevant to smelters or secondary recycling companies.

Biography
Stephen Taiwo is Supply Chain Standards Manager with International Tin Association (ITA) and the lead on the Association’s Code of Conduct, which sets out corporate values and commitments for tin mining, smelting and recycling operations. As the world authority on tin, the ITA coordinates tin industry initiatives in sustainability, technology and market analysis.
Stephen is a Practitioner member of the Institute of Environmental Management & Assessment (IEMA) with over 12 years’ experience and knowledge of supply chain laws, standards, audits, and reporting tools. He is a qualified management systems auditor (ISO 14001 and 9001), giving him a unique perspective on the operation and management of Management Systems.
To date, he has worked with public and private sector organisations in various roles, responsible for good governance and ensuring the highest standards of integrity are applied to the their activities.
