ABSTRACT
Mining and the sustainability of commodities
The mining and processing of minerals underpins modern technology and infrastructure. Each year, over 3.3 billion tonnes of metals are produced globally, and most predictions of demand show increasing consumption of metals in the coming decades, including in renewable energy generation, electric vehicles and batteries. The transition of the world’s economies and industries to more sustainable energy and technologies will require more mining and processing of non-renewable mineral resources, with associated positive and negative impacts on the environment and society.
Anglo Pacific is a financier to the mining sector and recognises that new commodity supply underpinned by sustainability principles and low carbon intensity is crucial to providing the raw materials required to achieve global energy transition objectives. Better stewardship and more responsible mining operations can help minimise the negative impacts on the environment and communities and improve the overall sustainability of commodity uses. This is the ethos that guides our investment decisions and strategy which must be at the forefront for all companies.
