Abstract:

Geoscience societies are themselves examples of long-lasting and successful collaborations, generally focused on specific subdisciplines or geographic areas. The American Geosciences Institute (AGI), which is a federation of about 50 geoscience organizations, represents and serves all branches of the geosciences. AGI has provided collaborative leadership and a forum for collective action on matters of common interest to geoscience societies for 77 years.

This talk reviews the collaborative process to develop the 2015 AGI Guidelines for Ethical Professional Conduct, an aspirational document outlining overarching ethical standards that are relevant for all professional geoscientists. The Guidelines are widely applicable and have been endorsed by 29 AGI member organizations.
