This talk focuses on the approaches underlying the plethora of responsible mining schemes and templates currently available and will discuss the evolution of these schemes and standards and the gaps that remain. The largest gap is within external/third-party auditing and assurance mechanisms that must be addressed, otherwise the spectre of ‘social-washing’ and ‘green-washing’ will remain. This research is part of the RESOURCING Project, funded by the EC through its Horizon 2020 Programme.

Biography
Dr. Masuma Farooki is a development economist, with over 10 years of experience working on commodity related issues for developing and advanced resource-rich countries. Her focus is on measuring the socio-economic impact of the resource sector and developing frameworks for the implementation of responsible mining practices. Her work involves analysis of global value chains, industrial, trade and mineral policies, the social licence to operate and efforts for mine rehabilitation and closure. She also works closely with legal professionals, balancing mining policy with mining regulations to design practical best practice standards and regulations.
She has conducted research on a wide range of issues in the mineral sector, such as sustainable mining practices across mining value chains entering the EU; ASM and EU Conflict Minerals; analysing the economic impact of permit delays in the US; upgrading supplier firms in the Southern African mining sector through linkages with European SMEs; and standardising the reporting of EITI data requirements and the impact of foreign direct investment on the economy and the environment in Guyana. She is currently working on the RESOURCING Project, a Horizon 2020 funded project examining responsible souring in the EU value chains.
