Central Asia Metals (‘CAML’) has always taken its social responsibilities seriously, and has since 2013 employed a site-based Sustainability Director who, together with the Board and senior management teams, has ensured that the Group operates to high standards in these key areas. However, in H1 2019, we became increasingly aware of the requirement, in particular from our investors, for additional qualitative and quantitative disclosure regarding our sustainability efforts and achievements. The Central Asia Metals team then began looking into how to produce a standalone sustainability report and, in April 2020, we published our first report covering our activities corporately and at the Kounrad operation in Kazakhstan and the Sasa zinc-lead mine in North Macedonia.
Our 2019 Sustainability Report includes our approach to transparent business conduct, maintaining safe operations, maximising the value we create for stakeholders and our efforts to minimise negative environmental or social impacts.
Getting started in the process to write an initial sustainability report can be daunting, especially for many smaller mining companies. In our forthcoming presentation, we plan to share how we approached:
- Understanding what would be expected of us in a standalone report
- Categorising the most material sustainability topics on which to report
- Optimal presentation of our data
- Structuring our report
Biography
Louise spent much of her career working for ten years as a mining analyst focused on London listed companies. Most recently in this role, she worked as part of the No.3 Extel ranked team at Investec covering a wide range of companies including miners in the FTSE100 index and junior miners and explorers. Louise has a degree in geology from the University of Liverpool and a master’s degree in mining geology from the Camborne School of Mines. Louise joined CAML in 2015.
