Emily Iona Stewart – 2024 – Becoming first choice; How the EU will need to offer true value addition to partners to meet aims on diversifying mineral streams

Abstract

Becoming first choice; How the EU will need to offer true value addition to partners to meet aims on diversifying mineral streams.

The CRMA established ambitious targets to diversify its access to critical raw materials by 2030. However, early blunders in signing a strategic partnership with Rwanda show that the EU needs a rethink of its geopolitical understandings and an enhanced offer to tempt resource rich countries away from established trade links with China.

This talk will look at the future of EU access to transition minerals, and explore how strategic partnerships, community involvement, and value sharing could be the key to meeting EU targets and staying within planetary boundaries.
